Proverbs of the day (22) https://news.iaspayablog.com/proverbs-of-the-day-22/ https://news.iaspayablog.com/proverbs-of-the-day-22/#respond Wed, 22 Jan 2025 19:05:02 +0000 https://news.iaspayablog.com/?p=1510 Proverbs 22:16

Whoever oppresses the poor to increase his own wealth, or gives to the rich, will only come to poverty.

The Tale of Two Merchants

In the bustling marketplace of Olde Town, where merchants hawked their wares from dawn till dusk, there lived two men of trade: Silas and Gideon. Both were known for their cunning in business, but their methods couldn’t have been more different.

Silas, a man with a heart as hard as flint, saw every transaction as a battle to be won. He would buy from the poor at the lowest prices, exploiting their desperation, and sell at exorbitant rates to those who could afford it. His wealth grew like a weed, unchecked and overwhelming, but so did the whispers of discontent among the townsfolk.

Gideon, on the other hand, was a merchant whose soul was as expansive as the market itself. He dealt fairly with everyone, ensuring the poor received a fair wage for their goods and that even the rich didn’t pay more than was just. His shop was modest, his wealth modest too, but his name was synonymous with integrity.

One fateful harvest season, a great drought struck the land. The wells dried up, the crops withered, and hunger began to gnaw at the bellies of the poor. Silas saw this as an opportunity; he bought up all the remaining grain at rock-bottom prices and hoarded it, planning to sell it back at a fortune when desperation peaked.

Gideon, however, opened his stores. He sold what he had at prices affordable to all, even if it meant he would barely break even. He knew the value of community over coin.

As winter approached, the poor, who had once been oppressed by Silas’s greed, now had nothing to give. They turned away from his store, unable to afford even the smallest sack of grain. Silas, expecting a flood of customers, found his shop eerily quiet, his wealth now as worthless as the dried husks in his storeroom. He had no friends, no goodwill to lean on, and soon, he too faced the specter of poverty he had so carelessly inflicted upon others.

Gideon, however, was not alone. The community remembered his kindness. Those who had managed to save, thanks to his fair dealings, came back to buy from him, ensuring he could sustain himself. And when spring returned, bringing with it rain and hope, the townspeople rallied around Gideon, helping him to rebuild and expand his business, not out of charity, but mutual respect and prosperity.

The moral of the story was clear to all: wealth amassed through the oppression of the poor or the enrichment of the already wealthy leads only to one’s downfall. True wealth lies in fairness, community, and the heart’s generosity. And so, in Olde Town, the tale of Silas and Gideon became a lesson passed down through generations, reminding all that the true value of wealth is in how it uplifts, not in how it dominates.
